You pay a little more per kilo, but your horse gets far more of what he actually needs. Cheap local hay is mostly a belly-filler: it fills the stomach but does little for him, delivering only ~216 g of protein a day against the ~800 g he needs. Prime Hay delivers ~864 g straight from the forage, exactly where a horse's gut wants it. To close that gap with cheap hay you pile on concentrates, and that's not just an extra cost: more hard feed means a higher risk of colic and stomach trouble. Better hay, far less grain, and a calmer gut — often for a comparable monthly bill, and with the big bale usually the lowest cost per kilo.
