It began with our own horses
Prime Hay is João and Marlot, two people who simply love horses. And like every good story, ours begins with our own.
Marlot grew up in the Netherlands, where green, nutrient-rich hay is just… normal. Nobody thinks about it. That changed the moment she moved south, first to Spain, then to Portugal. Suddenly she was standing in the feed room looking at pale, stalky hay, doing the maths, and realising her own horses were slowly heading towards deficiencies. Good forage had gone from a given to a daily worry.
So we fixed it ourselves. With João’s local roots and long-standing friendships with farmers, and Marlot’s international eye for quality, we went looking for hay we’d happily feed our own horses. And once we found it, we noticed something: everyone around us was quietly fighting the same battle. What began as a fix for our own stable turned out to be the answer a whole market was waiting for.
Today Prime Hay runs warehouses in Loulé and Almeirim and delivers right across Portugal and Spain, trusted by private owners, breeders, competition yards and professional stables. But every decision still starts with the question we asked back then:

What a horse deserves, and what was missing
A horse isn’t built for meals. It’s built to graze: 14 to 16 hours a day of slow, fibre-rich forage. That is what its stomach, teeth and mind are designed for. Forage isn’t a side dish. It is the diet.
What nature intended
Steady chewing, steady fibre, a stomach that is rarely empty. Good forage protects the gut, keeps the mind calm and holds condition stable. Everything else in the feed room is only a supplement to that foundation.
The reality in the south
In the Iberian climate, truly good meadow hay is scarce. Much of what is for sale is cut late: pale, stalky, low in protein and unknown in sugar. Owners patch the gap with buckets of concentrate, and the horse pays the price in its stomach, airways and behaviour.
