If you love horses, heritage and atmosphere, the Feira Nacional do Cavalo in Golegã is unforgettable. From 7 to 16 November 2025, the quiet Ribatejo town, about 130 km northeast of Lisbon and often called the "Capital of the Horse", transforms into a vibrant equestrian festival filled with history, elegance and tradition.
Centuries of Tradition
The fair's origins date back to the 18th century, when it was known as the Feira de São Martinho. It evolved into Portugal's premier celebration of the Lusitano horse, and since 1972 has carried the official title Feira Nacional do Cavalo. Few events capture the bond between a country and its native breed so completely, and for breeders and enthusiasts it has become an essential date in the equestrian year. The highlight falls on 11 November, Saint Martin's Day, marked by the scent of roasted chestnuts and the taste of new wine, a sensory tradition as beloved as the horses themselves.
A Festival for All the Senses
Visitors experience magnificent Lusitano horses parading through the streets, riders and breeders in traditional Portuguese attire, horse-drawn carriages and families celebrating late into the night. The Lusitano's proud carriage and gentle temperament make it a natural star of the show, whether under saddle in the arena or admired at close quarters by the crowds. Market stalls sell tack, leather goods, riding clothes, crafts and local delicacies, turning the whole town into a living celebration of equestrian culture.
