The way hay is produced, stored and transported directly affects its quality, cost and environmental footprint. These three things are more connected than they might seem: forage that is handled well tends to be both better for the horse and lighter on the planet. At Prime Hay Portugal, we have refined every step of the process so our forage is not only nutritionally optimal but also responsibly sourced and delivered with minimal impact.

How We Work More Sustainably

Our sustainable approach rests on a few key practices:

  • Preserving hay's natural structure: we avoid excessive plastic wrapping, letting hay breathe while maintaining its natural moisture balance for nutrient retention and palatability. Hay that can breathe is far less prone to trapped moisture and spoilage, so this choice protects quality and reduces plastic waste at the same time.
  • Reducing transport emissions: extra-pressed bales cut the volume needed for transport, reducing fuel use and CO₂ emissions by nearly half compared to traditional bales. Fitting more forage into every load means fewer journeys for the same amount of hay, which is a genuine, measurable saving.
  • Soil health and responsible farming: our hay comes from fields managed with crop rotation, natural fertilisation and sustainable harvesting for long-term fertility and biodiversity. Healthy soil grows better grass, so caring for the land is also how we secure the quality of tomorrow's forage.

Quality and Responsibility Go Together

What we find encouraging is how often the sustainable choice and the high-quality choice turn out to be the same choice. Letting hay breathe protects its nutrients; pressing it tightly for transport also makes it easier to store and handle; looking after the soil produces better forage year after year. Sustainability, for us, is not a compromise on quality but a natural consequence of doing things properly.

Giving Back

Our responsibility does not end at the point of sale. We also give back by providing forage for rescued and rehabilitated horses, reinforcing a commitment to ethical responsibility that reaches beyond business. Helping horses that have had a difficult start return to health is something we care about deeply, and it keeps us connected to the reason we do this work in the first place.

By choosing Prime Hay Portugal, you ensure superior forage for your horse while supporting a smarter, more sustainable way of producing and delivering quality nutrition. If you would like to know more about our approach, we would be glad to share it with you.
