Small bales or big bales of straw?
Small bales of straw are the easy choice for private yards. You can carry them by hand, one fits in a wheelbarrow, and they stack neatly in a barn or feed room. Our French small bales are double-compressed to about 22 kg, bright, clean and low in dust, and they come palletised. Portuguese wheat straw small bales weigh about 20 kg and are a practical, traditional option for everyday bedding.
Big bale wheat straw suits bigger yards that bed down many stables. A Portuguese big bale weighs about 300 kg, a French big bale about 500 kg. You need a tractor or loader to move them and a dry, covered place to keep them, but you handle far fewer bales for the same amount of straw.
French or Portuguese? Our French straw is double-compressed and chosen for a bright, clean, low-dust bed. Our Portuguese wheat straw is carefully selected on smell, colour and structure. Compare both in the table above.

What straw is used for
A warm, deep bed
Wheat straw is the traditional horse bedding. A thick straw bed is soft and inviting, which encourages horses to lie down and rest, and it gives a comfortable layer between hooves and a hard floor.
Feeding straw, with care
Wheat straw is high in fibre and low in energy. Some owners mix a little into the forage of easy keepers to stretch the ration and add chewing time. It never replaces good hay, and it is best done with advice from your vet or an equine nutritionist.
Dust and storage
Keep straw dry, off the ground on pallets, under cover and with good airflow. Shake out bales away from your horse, and choose low-dust straw or shavings for horses with sensitive airways. Keep it well away from anything that could start a fire.
Straw vs wood shavings
Both make a good bed. The right choice depends on your horse and your yard. Straw gives a deep, warm bed that horses like to lie on. It is bulky, so plan for storage space and room for the muck heap.
Prime Hay Wood Shavings come in compressed bags of about 15 kg. They are soft, highly absorbent and low in dust, quick to muck out and easy to store. Many owners choose shavings for horses with sensitive airways, or for horses that eat their straw bed. If you are unsure, ask your vet.
Plenty of yards use both, and you can combine them in one order.

How much straw does a stable use?
It varies a lot, which is why we don't quote a fixed number of bales per week. It depends on how many hours your horse spends inside, the size of the box, whether you muck out fully every day or keep a deep litter bed, and on the horse itself: some are tidy, others spread everything around.
The practical way is to start with a half or full pallet of small bales, note how many you use over a few weeks, and then reorder in the volume that fits. Yards bedding many boxes often move to big bales. For the hay side of your order, the feeding calculator works out what each horse needs. For bedding, send us a WhatsApp with your number of stables and we'll help you plan.

How much does a bale of straw cost?

Small bales or big bales of straw: which should I buy?
Small bales (about 20 to 22 kg) are easy to carry and store and suit private yards. Big bales (about 300 or 500 kg) suit larger yards that bed down many stables and have a tractor or loader and covered storage.
What is the difference between French and Portuguese wheat straw?
Our French straw is double-compressed into dense bales and chosen for a bright, clean, low-dust bed. Our Portuguese wheat straw is a traditional bedding straw, carefully selected on smell, colour and structure. Both come in small and big bales.
Can horses eat wheat straw?
Horses often nibble their straw bed, and some owners feed a little wheat straw to easy keepers to add fibre and chewing time without many calories. It is low in energy and protein, so it never replaces hay. Introduce it gradually and agree it with your vet or an equine nutritionist first, especially for horses with a history of colic.
Straw or wood shavings: which is better?
Neither is better for every horse. Straw gives a deep, warm, traditional bed. Our wood shavings are low in dust, highly absorbent and quick to muck out, and are often chosen for horses with sensitive airways or horses that eat their bed. See the wood shavings →
Is there VAT on straw?
Yes. Our straw prices include 23% Portuguese VAT. There is one exception: registered agricultural producers who buy hay or straw for animals kept for food production, such as breeding, milk or meat, can sign our 0% VAT declaration once, for deliveries within Portugal. Horses kept for sport, competition or leisure fall outside that exemption, and shavings always carry 23%. Check with your accountant before you sign. Read the VAT declaration →
Do you sell hay and straw together?
Yes. Alongside straw we stock selected French hay and carefully selected Portuguese hay, plus shavings and feed, all in one delivery. Read about our French hay →
